Fit for the Family

Started by Nancy and Bill Traverso more than 20 years ago, Canby Landscape Supply is still driven by the same family values. With son Bill now at the helm, the company’s dealer partner had to complement the team’s unique approach. Luckily, they found the perfect fit with Powerscreen of Washington.

A well-known and trusted local landscape company, Canby Landscape Supply defines what it means to meet customer needs. From their site in Canby, Oregon, they supply a huge range of materials for both domestic and commercial projects. Paving slabs, decorative rocks, compost, crushed rock and more are produced to order.

This operational approach means the family-led business needs equipment that’s as multi-skilled as their team. With the mix of material production changing on a weekly basis, their set-up needs to flex to meet these changing needs. Plus, any machines they use have to operate efficiently, whatever level of throughput is required of them.

Driven by the same passion to meet customer needs, the Powerscreen of Washington team was a natural partner for Canby Landscape Supply. With a range of reliable and efficient machinery, the dealer could match the business’s agile, flexible way of working. As Dan Bianchini, Account Manager for Powerscreen explains, “Just like us, the Traverso family has a unique approach that’s driven by their customers. This has made a strong base for mutual growth.”

Driven by principles

Family values are a big part of the Canby Landscape Supply business. First established by husband and wife team Nancy and Bill it all started in their Oregon rock pit. From this site, they produced and sold gravel, paving slabs, ornamental rock and flagstones directly to both businesses and end customers.

Though this material supply is still the bedrock of their company, when their local customers started to search for a compost and soil supplier, the teams saw an opportunity to diversify into the organic recycling sector. Working with Powerscreen, they were able to bring the most appropriate and reliable equipment to produce these materials onto the same site.

“The family-run team doesn’t have the biggest headcount,” Dan says, “So because they’re not the biggest operation, they don’t run all their on-site equipment at the same time. Instead, they rotate around each machine on a daily basis and run each part of the set-up until they meet their quota of material as ordered by customers. As a result, their equipment needs to get up and running quickly and produce high-quality material efficiently.”

Canby Landscape Supply owner Bill Traverso adds, “These machines have helped our business hugely with the quality of material that comes off them. It’s impeccable. There are also very few breakdowns, the standard of the equipment is unbelievable.”

Agile by design

To produce quality materials from their modular set-up efficiently, having a diverse set of equipment is key. Central to their organic matter processes is the Komptech Crambo Mobile 6000. This low-speed shredder has helped the team increase their throughput without compromising on the quality of their material.

Combined with a Komptech Nemus 2700, the suppliers can remove plastic and other unwanted particles more easily. The drum-based design of both machines and horizontal grinder in the Crambo makes the screening and separation process faster and easier. This results in a premium product that Canby can sell for a higher price.

Similarly, the heavy-duty, mobile design of their Powerscreen Warrior 1800 means the team can sort through topsoil at a high capacity in any area of the site. This fits in perfectly with their modular approach to production and means they can deliver more material for customers in the same time window.

Yet the Canby team’s striving for service excellence didn’t stop there. When some customers fed back about too much contamination in their product, they picked up the phone and asked Dan to help. “They spotted some small parts of light rubbish being left in the material,” he says. “I recommended that they bring on a Screenpod Airvac 82 1600 Dual Air. This slot into their set-up easily and used air filters to remove unwanted particles. Elevating the standard of their material even further.”

Even when the Canby team needed a bit of extra support with their capacity, Dan was ready to help. “The team rented a Komptech Star Screen Multistar XL3 for around six months. This meant they could catch up on orders and continue to meet customer demands without committing to more machinery. The rental side of our business means we can offer this level of flexibility to our customers.”

A trusted advisor

From talking through new opportunities to servicing machines and recommending the best equipment upgrades, Powerscreen has become a trusted advisor to the Traverso family business. By meeting their agile, flexible approach, Dan and his team have become invaluable partners in their growth.

“I have a huge respect for Bill and his business,” Dan says. “He spotted a niche no one else was doing and took a punt on it. Our team supported them with the expertise and knowledge to get them the right machines. Plus, with our mix of rentals and sales, we could help them make any new opportunity work. With the backup of decent machinery and a top service team, we supported Canby to continue as a proactive and forward-thinking business.”

“Just like them, we listen to our customers to see what they need and work with them to create the best approach.”

Bill adds, “The fact that Powerscreen supplies all the mechanical aspects has helped us out loads. The machines are hugely reliable, but whenever we do need parts, we can rely on Powerscreen to get them for us. It’s great to have them at our side.”
